In most destinations, choosing a month is an exercise in nuance: a little more sun, a few less people, a few degrees of difference that are noticeable but do not decide the trip. In Muscat there are no nuances. There is one season in which the city can be walked and another in which it almost cannot, and the line between the two is marked with a precision few destinations offer: fourteen and a half degrees of mean maximum between the mildest month and the harshest.
01 The year's axis is not rain: it is heat
The first thing worth ruling out is rain as a criterion. The 1991–2020 normals give an annual total of barely 73.3 millimetres, and the wettest month, January, stops at 14.3. That makes Muscat a destination with practically no wet season: there are no months to avoid because of water, only months to avoid because of temperature.
The real criterion is the mean maximum, and there the year's range is enormous: from 25.1 °C in January to 39.5 in May. Almost fifteen degrees of difference in a city at sea level, without the altitude that softens summer in other destinations. It is that jump, and not the rain, that decides when to go.
The four moments that define the year

02 From 25 to 39 degrees in four months
What makes Muscat's year especially abrupt is how fast the change happens. In January the mean maximum is 25.1 °C, very manageable. In February it rises only to 26.3. But from there the climb accelerates: 29.4 in March, 34.6 in April and 39.5 in May. In just three months, the city goes from mild to extreme.
And once it is up, it stays up for a long time. From April to October, seven months in a row, the mean maximum does not drop below 34 °C. It is not a brief peak you can dodge with a badly timed week-long trip: it is more than half the year.
03 The record that gives summer its real scale
The averages, high as they are, do not tell the whole story. The all-time record measured in Muscat is 49.2 °C, in August. It is not a one-day anomaly in some random month: it is the ceiling of a month whose daily average already hovers around 36 degrees, so that peak is not as far from the usual as it seems.
Summer here is not managed with sunscreen. It is managed by rebuilding the day around shade.
The figure has a direct practical consequence: between May and September, any outdoor plan — walking the corniche, visiting a fort, going around the souk from outside — has to be done in the early hours of the morning or after sunset. At midday, in high summer, it is not a matter of comfort but of safety.
04 November to March, the window that exists
The other side of the data is a very clear window: from November to March, the mean maximum stays between 25 and 30 °C, with lows between 17 and 21. These are five months in which you can walk the city at any hour, sit on a terrace at midday and climb up to a fort without timing the outing around the heat.
Within that window, December and January are the mildest months strictly speaking, but November and February offer almost the same with fewer visitors. If the goal is to escape the heat without landing in the busiest season, those two edge months are the most reasonable option.
05 If your trip falls in summer
If your dates are not negotiable and fall between May and September, the trip is still possible, but at another rhythm. You set out very early, stop for several hours at midday — air-conditioned shopping malls are, in all honesty, part of the plan — and go back out onto the street at dusk, when the city comes back to life.
Summing up the year in one sentence: in Muscat you do not choose between sun and cloud, you choose between manageable heat and heat that organises the day for you. November to March is the comfortable answer; the rest of the year demands a different plan, not a different trip.
